I love this cake since I was little. I remember having that for breakfast before going to school in the morning. Grandma would bring me a freshly steamed or panfried dish of new year cake while I was busy preparing my school bag! This food really brings me a lot of sweet memories....
I returned to Paris one week ago after a very nice but short holiday in Hong Kong where I celebrated the Chinese New Year with my family. When I think about this special festival, the first thing that came to my mind is the delicious Chinese New Year cake which is made of glutinous rice and brown cane sugar. It's actually called the "year cake" which, when translated directly from chinese, "year" "high", because in chinese "cake" and "high" have the same pronounciation. And this new year cake is supposed to kick start a year where things only go "up high". I introduced this festive food to my fellow european friends but unfortunately they don't seem to like chewing a sticky thing as this sweet glutinous rice cake......... What a pity!
